Gene Hoglan is one of the most recognisable drummers in extreme metal, with a career that has seen him behind the kit for some of the genre’s most influential and uncompromising bands. From Death, Dark Angel and Strapping Young Lad to Dethklok, Testament and countless other projects, Hoglan’s playing has become a defining part of some of metal’s most celebrated records.
Now, Australian fans will get the rare opportunity to see Hoglan pull double duty when Death To All and Dark Angel hit the country for a run of shows that brings together two very different chapters of his career — from performing the music of Chuck Schuldiner with Death To All to unleashing the speed and intensity of Dark Angel.
The Everblack Podcast caught up with Gene Hoglan ahead of the Death To All / Dark Angel Australian tour to chat about taking on double duty with both bands, preparing for two very different sets, his history with Death, the legacy of Chuck Schuldiner, touring with his wife Laura Christine, Dark Angel’s upcoming plans, and the possibility of new Pitch Black Forecast material.

DEATH TO ALL – A tribute to Death and the music of Chuck Schuldiner.
Considered to be among the most influential bands in heavy metal music, Death remains a pioneering force in death metal to this day.
On their first Australian tour, DEATH TO ALL will perform a massive legacy set and pay tribute to Death‘s entire catalogue, including material from ‘Scream Bloody Gore’ (1987), Leprosy (1988), ‘Spiritual Healing’ (1990), ‘Human’ (1991), ‘Individual Thought Patterns’ (1993), ‘Symbolic’ (1995), and ‘The Sound of Perseverance’ (1998).
Comprising of significant Death members: the legendary drummer Gene Hoglan (Dark Angel, Dethklok), bass beast Steve DiGiorgio (Testament, Sadus), guitarist Bobby Koelble (Death) and joined by singer/guitarist Max Phelps (Exist, Cynic) this is a must see for anyone who calls themselves a fan of death metal and extreme music.
DARK ANGEL became known in the 80’s thrash metal circles for their ability to deliver some of the genre’s most challenging and articulate albums without ever losing touch with its core attributes of pure speed and primal aggression. In 1986, DARK ANGEL released their second studio album, ‘Darkness Descends’, which is widely considered to be their seminal release and a thrash metal classic, and in September last year released their long-awaited comeback album ‘Extinction Level Event’!
