NOFX – ‘Half Album’ [Album Review]

Review: JD Garrahy

Well, here we are. The final NOFX album. And it’s not even that, NOFX are gifting us with ‘Half Album’ and you know what, in true NOFX fashion, it’s simplistically brilliant.

‘Fake- A-Wish Foundation’ is just that amazingly tongue in cheek humor that Fat Mike is renowned for. With a peppering of signature riffage and Smelly’s fantastic percussive work, this is the best way to start the sign off for a 40+ year career that was built on tunes such as this.

‘I’m A Rat’ is that song that screams Cali punk. Fast paced, gritty and satisfyingly simple, its perfect NOFX creativity at its finest. No wonder the boys chose to release this as a single.

‘The Queen Is Dead’ is relaxed yet punky enough to get the blood flowing. The lyrics speak of a fallen comrade that obviously had a profound effect on Mike and the band. You can feel the raw emotion that all these seasoned musicians emit every second. This is an amazing song and a great tribute to the Queen of Punk.

‘The Humblest Man In The World’. What a great song. A sledge on one hand, but also the highest form of accolade in the punk community. A diss track from NOFX would make me a happy little punk kid. One more song Mike?

The final song of this album is 6 minutes of bliss. ‘The Last Drag’ is not only the perfect outro to this ‘Half’ album, but also the perfect way to round out such an illustrious career. I’m in love with this track, it just sums up NOFX so well. Bravo lads.

So, you came here expecting a full-length album review. Well, too bad. This is 5 songs of pure NOFX punkin’ bliss. We’re gonna miss you ragtag weirdos. Stay punk, stay weird, stay NOFX.
