“The Moth is about the journey—but it is also about arrival”
Canadian metal maverick Devin Townsend has built a career on distinct creative worlds—heavy records, atmospheric detours, character-driven releases—each with its own logic and weather system. His latest release, The Moth, is different. It arrives without a pre-existing template, not as a pivot for novelty’s sake, but as a culmination: a project conceived from the beginning as orchestral, choral, and theatrical in scope, with the scale required to underline the emotional transformation at the heart of the concept.
An album over a decade in the making, The Moth finally arrives on 29 May 2026. This 24-track record began as a vague vision more than a decade ago, existing in the back of Devin Townsend’s mind as his “life’s work.” About six years ago, following an acoustic performance in Amsterdam, Townsend was approached by the head of the North Netherlands’ Orchestra and Choir with an offer: to bring orchestral grandeur to his extensive catalogue.
Townsend’s response was immediate—and telling. If those forces were going to be assembled, he wanted to spend them on something new: the original work that had been circling him for years, waiting for the right moment. That was when The Moth shifted from concept to reality.
To mark the announcement, Devin Townsend has also unveiled the first glimpse into the world of The Moth with the track ‘Enter The City’, accompanied by a video created by Studio Sparks.
As Townsend explains, The Moth is “a loose story following someone who realises that old patterns of behaviour are no longer serving them. By digging in and sitting with themselves, an internal conflict is revealed—one they may have been resisting or unconsciously rationalising for years.” The track ‘Enter The City’ arrives early in that narrative arc.
The Moth unfolds across three distinct parts. Alongside the main album, The Moth – The Afterlife highlights the grandeur of the orchestra and choir in a more stripped-back, purist presentation, while The Moth – The War captures the live debut performance from March 2025 in the Netherlands, showcasing the raw emotion of the project’s first full realisation on stage.
The release will be available in multiple formats, including a limited deluxe 3CD+Blu-ray artbook featuring the main album, The Moth – The Afterlife, and The Moth – The War (Live). The Blu-ray includes the full live film, alongside Dolby Atmos and high-resolution stereo mixes. Additional formats include a limited 2CD edition, standard CD jewel case, gatefold triple 180g 2LP with fold-out booklet, and digital editions.
At its core, The Moth is anchored by a central theme: true self-acceptance. As Townsend puts it, it’s about facing discomfort without turning away. “The most obvious metaphor for change within the concept of this project was a moth—from caterpillar to an entirely different creature—one so drawn to the light that it burns itself away. What remains is immutable—only the spirit.”
Through its most challenging moments, Devin Townsend credits the collective effort behind the project as essential to its completion. Contributors include the North Netherlands Orchestra & Choir, orchestrators Joseph Stevenson and Niels Bye Nielsen, longtime collaborators Darby Todd, Mike Keneally and James Leach, as well as guests such as Steve Vai, Anneke van Giersbergen and Lynn Wu (OU). Visual artists Travis Smith and Eliran Kantor also played key roles, alongside co-mixer Chris Edrich, engineers Ben Searles and Jacob Hermann, Atmos mixer Ron Searles, mastering engineer Troy Glessner, and choirs from around the world—together helping bring this ambitious vision fully to life.
