FIT FOR A KING have dropped their highly anticipated eighth studio album, Lonely God. Recorded in Los Angeles with acclaimed producer Daniel Braunstein (Spiritbox) and released via Solid State Records, the album marks a bold new chapter for the metalcore heavyweights.
Of the album, Kirby shares, “Lonely God is the result of us writing with no agendas. We didn’t care about which song could be viral, or if we needed radio tracks, etc. We just wrote what we wanted, for the first time, in a really long time.”
He finishes, “All five of us have our fingerprints on this album. We found a way to balance our voices. We’ve always been genuine with the lyrics, and that’s the case again. There’s so much heart behind all of the instrumentation too. There’s definitely a lot of growth because our bond is tighter than ever.”
6 Fun Facts About Making Lonely God with Ryan Kirby
1. Hot Tub Listening Sessions
Every night after recording, we’d unwind by sitting in a hot tub, listening back to the day’s demos from start to finish. It became a kind of ritual—part recap, part relaxation. We always book an Airbnb when we make a record, and ideally, it has a hot tub. This one was in California, so the nights were breezy and perfect. Honestly, if nothing else, it was just really peaceful.
2. That Time We (Probably) Saw will.i.am
This has nothing to do with the record—but while we were working on Lonely God, we saw will.i.am parked outside the studio. There’s a cigar shop connected to the studio, and I guess he stopped in for a cigar. Someone asked how I knew it was him, and I said, “Because the license plate said will.i.am.” It was on this super nice Lexus. I probably should’ve asked him to do a feature—missed opportunity. Unless that wasn’t him… in which case someone out there needs to chill with the impersonation.
3. “Shelter” Came Together in One Day
Josh Gilbert came in for just one day—and we wrote “Shelter” from start to finish. We knew Josh from touring with As I Lay Dying during their first tour back. It was still the original lineup at the time, and we got to bond with those guys. Daniel Braunstein hit him up like, “Want to come write with us for a day? If nothing happens, nothing happens.” But it did—“Shelter” happened.
4. Album Art: Hand-Drawn, Not AI
The artwork for Lonely God was done by my best friend—he was the best man at my wedding 10 years ago. He’s always been a great artist, and I finally asked, “Hey, would you want to do the album cover?” He said yes. It was all completely hand-drawn and took months to finish because we wanted it to stay as organic and human as possible—very much the opposite of AI. Ironically, someone once accused it of being AI-generated, and we just laughed. It was actually inspired by the marketing for the horror film Longlegs—I’m a big horror fan and love how simple and eerie that campaign was.
5. “Technium” Was a Different Process
“Technium” is the only track not recorded with Daniel Braunstein—it was done with Landon Tewers. At the time, we hadn’t met Daniel yet, and Braunstein wasn’t available, but we knew Landon tracked vocals. So we hit him up like, “Hey, want to help us record this?” And during the session, it just clicked—we realized Landon’s voice would sound amazing on the song. So he ended up on it.
6. Lochie Was on Board a Year in Advance
For the Australians—Lochie Keogh (from Alpha Wolf) was the first person we asked to be on Monolith, and we asked him a year before we even recorded it. I actually asked him in Dresden, Germany during a show we played together. I sent him the demo way early, and he was excited from the start. It just took a while to bring it all together. And now it’s out there!
Meanwhile, 2022’s The Hell We Create marked their fifth Top 3 debut on the Billboard Top Christian Albums Chart and third straight Top 15 debut on the Top Album Sales Chart. Outburn applauded how, “With The Hell We Create, Fit For A King takes on a new depth,” and KERRANG! assured, “It hits hard in all the right places.” They’ve impressively garnered just shy of half-a-billion streams fueled by staples like When Everything Means Nothing, The Price of Agony, Breaking the Mirror, and more. Along the way, they also collaborated with the likes of August Burns Red, The Plot In You, The Ghost Inside, and We Came As Romans in addition to packing houses on tour.
