War Bear’s latest release, HACHI MACHI, is a five-track EP that moves between humour, vulnerability, questionable decisions and some very real shit. From drinking games and impulsive decisions to family, mortality and the way we deal with adversity, the EP doesn’t stick to one subject or one mood.
At its heart, it’s about the things that make us who we are, the people we love, the things we struggle with, the ways we cope, and the parts of ourselves we probably shouldn’t take too seriously.
There’s plenty of weight here, but there’s also plenty of room for fun. BUFFALO turns one of the band’s favourite drinking games into a song, while HACHI MACHI embraces the weirdness and impulsivity that makes us unique. MISTAKE looks inward at the responsibility and love that comes with being a parent, while RATHOLE2RATHOLE explores the cycles of negativity and victimhood that can keep us stuck. OKSANA closes things out on a much darker note, reflecting on the end of a life spent trying to provide, achieve and be enough.
