SEAN MURPHY Talks Music Photography & New Book My Friend Weezer

Interview: Dan Maynard

SEAN MURPHY has spent more than two decades cementing his reputation as one of the most in-demand music photographers on the planet. Having shot everyone from some of the biggest names in rock to artists across multiple genres, he is perhaps best known for his long-running relationship with alt-rock icons WEEZER, serving as the band’s trusted visual documentarian for more than 25 years.

Now, MURPHY has pulled back the curtain on that history with the release of his new coffee table book, My Friend, Weezer, a collection of stories, rare moments, and previously unseen photographs chronicling his years alongside the band.

In our conversation, MURPHY opens up about his unconventional path into photography, life spent moving between the United States and England, and what it takes to survive in an ever-changing music industry. We also dig into the realities of music photography then versus now, the friendships forged on the road, and the creative bond that made him such a vital part of WEEZER’s world.

Most of all, we dive deep into the stories behind My Friend, Weezer and the legacy built through decades behind the lens.
