Throat of the Mountain, the new EP from South East Queensland post-metal band The Matador, is out now.

The EP brings together a three-track arc that began with Etched in Ash and Etched in Stone, which were written as a single continuous movement. Throat of the Mountain serves as the culmination, expanding on those ideas into the band’s most dynamic and melodic material to date, including the most prominent use of clean vocals so far.

Returning after more than a decade, The Matador re-emerge as a four-piece, leaning into slow-burning heaviness, progressive structures and atmosphere. Across the EP, tension is allowed to build gradually before opening into heavier, more expansive passages.

“These songs emerged from a place of reflection and became a cathartic release for all of us,” vocalist Danny Godson explains. “Returning as a four-piece reshaped the internal balance of the band and led to a more evenly distributed creative voice. We became increasingly drawn to the tension between weight and space, allowing the music to unfold gradually and give each moment greater impact.”

The EP was engineered, recorded, mixed and mastered by Guy Cooper (Serotonin Productions).

Early singles have seen strong listener engagement, with the full EP designed to be experienced as a complete arc. The new material has already translated strongly live, with recent shows including supporting Beastwars and Hammers seeing a really positive response to the new songs, and the band set to appear at Necrosonic later this year.
