ALLEGAEON: Ezra Haynes Talks Australian Tour, Sobriety, Dave Otero & New Music

Colorado-based progressive melodic death metal innovators Allegaeon will storm Australian shores for a highly anticipated tour, bringing their signature blend of intricate guitar work, symphonic flourishes, and cerebral, science-inspired lyricism to fans Down Under.

Following the release of their critically acclaimed 2025 album The Ossuary Lens, the band will deliver powerful live shows across five major cities, marking a long-awaited return and, for some members, a first-ever visit to Australia.

Ahead of the tour, The Everblack Podcast sat down with Ezra Haynes of Allegaeon to discuss the upcoming Australian run, the making of The Ossuary Lens, and Ezra’s powerful journey through sobriety and his return to the band. He also talks about the album’s Grammy consideration, writing more personal and introspective material, working once again with producer Dave Otero, and the darker lyrical direction of the next Allegaeon album. Plus, he reveals the Australian animal he absolutely can’t stand.

Released in 2025, The Ossuary Lens marks a powerful new chapter for Allegaeon and a deeply personal statement from returning vocalist Ezra Haynes. While much of the band’s earlier material explored scientific and conceptual themes, this album turns the focus inward, drawing heavily on real-life experience, reflection, and hard-earned perspective. The result is an album that retains Allegaeon’s trademark technical precision and melodic complexity, but with a more emotional and human core driving the songwriting.

The record also represents a continued and refined collaboration with longtime producer Dave Otero, whose relationship with the band has evolved alongside their sound. This time around, the writing process was more deliberate and structured, with the band workshopping material together months in advance before entering the studio, allowing the songs to be sharpened and fully realized before recording even began.

The Ossuary Lens earned widespread critical praise and was even Grammy-considered — a rare feat for a band operating in the extreme metal world — further cementing Allegaeon’s reputation as one of the most forward-thinking and consistently ambitious acts in modern melodic death metal.
