Meanjin/Brisbane-based petalcore outfit Torizon release their dynamic new single ‘Currents‘, produced and mixed by Kalen Austin, and mastered by Mike Kalajian at Rogue Planet Studios (Bad Omens, Windwaker, Papa Roach). The band will release their debut conceptual EP ‘Meliora‘ on Friday, 19 September. Pre–order ‘Meliora‘ HERE.
Serving as the third chapter in the story of characters Luna and Sam as they navigate the aftermath of a miscarriage, ‘Currents’ explores themes of grief and resilience. Delicate vocals float over finger-picked guitar before jagged riffs, orchestral layers, and dual vocals from frontwoman Mish Sharma and bassist Ben Gallaher crash in like waves. Cinematic choruses are balanced by moments of stillness with ocean sounds, strings and clean guitar, before building into a sweeping bridge leading to an epic finale. ‘Currents’ is both a cathartic release and a hopeful turning point disguised as a sing-along belter.
Torizon touch on the meaning behind ‘Currents’:
“This track reflects the part where Luna is still in the undertow of grief, confronting trauma re-emergence after losing her baby. We used the ocean as a metaphor – those tidal pulls mirror trauma-formed neural pathways she has worked hard to rewire. The shoreline represents her healed self, the place she keeps returning to despite the challenges. ‘Currents’ will resonate with anyone who has dealt with PTSD and childhood trauma.”
Accompanying the release is a short, eye-grabbing video by Emerge Creative, shot at Colmslie Reserve, Mish’s home and Bunker Creative Studio in Meanjin/Brisbane. “You’ll see Luna holding an ultrasound of the baby she lost and reflecting on childhood photos of her and Sam, which are the real photos of both actors from when they were kids,” Mish adds. “Just as we started shooting the beach scenes, two dogs on a walk came running towards us, so naturally we stopped to play fetch and pat the puppies every time they came by.”
Earlier this year, Torizon released singles ‘Bloom‘ and ‘Sober‘, which were warmly embraced by Music Feeds, AAA Backstage, Ramona Magazine, The Music, and HEAVY Mag. ‘Bloom’ clocked over 10,000 Spotify streams in the first week of release and was added to Apple Music‘s Breaking Hard Rock editorial playlist. The tracks also received support from triple j, Unearthed and Australian Community Radio stations such as 4ZZZ, Radio Adelaide, Edge Radio, 2SER, 2XX FM, and PBS FM.
In the live arena, Torizon have packed hometown headline shows and shared stages with Circles, Valhalore, The Last Martyr, Days Like These, These Four Walls, Aurateque and NTH RD. This October, the band will bring their high-impact performances to the East Coast for their first-ever headline tour. Joined by Naarm/Melbourne’s alt-metal outfit New Million, the tour will stop in Eora/Sydney, Naarm/Melbourne, and Meanjin/Brisbane and will also feature local, heavy acts from each city.
