Hot of the heels of our re-issue of Ashen‘s debut album, Ritual of Ash, back in April of this year, this Australian juggernaut is back w/ their sophomore album, Leave the Flesh Behind!!!
While there is a familiarity when listening to Ashen, there is never a direct comparison that can be made to explain their sound. Unlike many death metal acts in the worldwide scene, Ashen are not competing for speed. On the contrary, they are groove monsters, creating massive waves of crushing riffs that ebb and flow between slow and mid-tempos without ever really putting their foot to the floor. Think of Gojira’s heaviest crushing moments and that’s about as close as it comes to what Ashen have created here. Unlike Gojira, Ashen stay firmly planted in the death metal realm, with nods to death metal pioneers such as Dismember and Bolt Thrower, but never going all in on either. Like all good bands do, Ashen have taken bits of all their influences, chewed them up and spit them out in their own wad of death metal cud.
